Woking Palace
Woking Palace is a Scheduled Ancient Monument situated on the alluvial flood plain of the original un-canalised course of the River Wey and about 1.5 km downstream from the parish church of St Peter’s, Old Woking, just south of the east end of Carters Lane. Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of Henry VII, turned the original manor house into a palace. Henry VII was a frequent visitor on his accession to the throne and his son Henry VIII extended and enlarged the Palace between 1515 and 1543. Further work was carried out between 1565 and 1594 during Elizabeth I’s reign. The Friends of Woking Palace is a Registered Charity whose Objects are The preservation and protection, upkeep and maintenance of Woking Palace, and the advancement of education of the public in the history of the Palace site. Apart from Open Days in May, July and September each year access to the site is restricted to organised visits.
