The Romney Marsh is one of the best places in south east England for family cycling with its miles of quiet, unspoilt lanes, and of course it is predominantly flat. As well as the many local routes, National Cycle Route 2 & 11 run across the Romney Marsh.
Route 2: The entire National Route 2 runs from Dover to Portsmouth, the section from Folkestone to Rye (32 miles) is reasonably flat. Leaving the centre of Folkestone, the path follows the seawall and is almost totally traffic free for 6 miles to the Royal Military Canal at Hythe. From Hythe, the Route moves a few miles inland taking quiet country lanes through the picturesque villages of Romney Marsh including Burmash and Old Romney. After passing the historic town of Lydd, it’s back onto a traffic free cycle path most of the way into Rye, rejoining the road only at Camber with its stunning wide sandy beach and dunes.
The Romney Marsh Countryside Project has produced a pack of 5 guided cycle rides on the Romney Marsh called ‘Romney Marsh Meanders’. This pack will lead you to the corners of the Marsh, where you can pedal along its quiet lanes.
The RMCP leads guided cycle rides across the Marsh throughout the year and has produced a ‘Cycling on the Romney Marsh’ leaflet.
