Why Rye?
Situated on a hilltop two miles from the sea, Rye is a charming cobbled town with far reaching views across Romney Marsh and out to sea. Over the years its meandering steep and cobbled streets have become a haven for artists and writers - Rye was once home to novelists Henry James and E.F. Benson, as well as artist Paul Nash. Today it is known for its antiques, potteries and galleries. There is also a good selection of restaurants, bars, cafés and tea rooms to linger and soak up the atmosphere.
Around Rye, the more energetic can enjoy a host of cycling and walking opportunities. For nature lovers, a trip to Rye Harbour Nature Reserve with its large variety of fauna and flora should delight. Winchelsea, another Cinque Port just three miles from Rye, is well worth a visit, and miles of sandy beaches can be found at Camber.
